Childhood sweethearts reunited through Facebook

Childhood sweethearts Joyce and Eddie first met back in 1951 when they both worked at United Dairies in New Eltham. Joyce was 15 and Eddie was 17.

Eddie then had to go to Egypt at 18 in 1952 and Joyce wrote to him all the time. When he was demobbed in 1954 and returned to Green Lane, they didn’t get together and ended up marrying others – marriages that both ended in divorce, Joyce's in 1976 and Eddie's in 1984. Since then Eddie had been looking for Joyce but to no avail, because he only knew Joyce’s surname before she got married.

12 months ago Joyce moved into one of Affinity Sutton’s Retirement Developments in Haywards Heath to remain independent and meet others.

Eddie is a Doris Day fan, so when Joyce heard a recent interview with Doris regarding her latest CD, Joyce fondly thought of Eddie and decided to type his name into her Facebook page. Low and behold his page came up with his photograph and she sent him a message. He replied straight away saying he had wondered about her for many years.

Eddie phoned Joyce on 4th September this year to ask if she’d like to visit. Joyce arrived that very afternoon. Even now, aged 75 and 77, the feelings are the same.

Joyce will be moving to his home at the end of November and they will be married on 20th December 2011. Eddie says he always knew they would be together again one day and never gave up hope. Hooray for Facebook!
